East Gaston Ladies pick up two wins
By JIM HEFFNER
- Thu, Feb 14, 2008
Coach Ernie Bridges East Gaston girls kept the pressure on Forestview last week by beating Ashbrook Tuesday 52-31 and swamping North Gaston Friday 73-22.
The Green Wave out rebounded the Warriors 22-13, but EG played superior defense, forcing 22 turnovers and getting 15 steals. Most of those turnovers were converted into points.
Lashonda McCorkle led the Warriors in scoring with 12, while Hayley Black contributed nine. Cameron Sealey had eight points, eight assists and four steals. Justin Taylor score 11 for Ashbrook.
Black, who salivates when she sees a zone defense, shot 7 for 10, including four of seven from beyond the arc, to lead the Warriors over North Gaston 73-22.
East Gaston scored the first 11 points and the Wildcats seemed shocked after that opening barrage.
“I didn’t think we played all that well defensively in the first half,” said Bridges. I think we played down to our competition.”
Maybe not, but the Warriors ended up with 16 steals and 29 rebounds, 12 more than North Gaston.
“I was afraid we’d have a letdown after the Huss and Ashbrook games,” Bridges said. “The zone didn’t work for them. A zone is always to Haley’s advantage. She’s a scorer, and scorers kill zones. She doesn’t play as well against a man-to-man.”
Bridges teams are noted for sharing the ball, and so it was Friday night. The Warriors played a textbook second half passing the ball beautifully and making their shots look easy. Good passes usually mean high percentage shots, and so it was Friday.
For some reason, North Gaston just doesn’t play well against East Gaston. They’ve lost both games this season by more than a 50-point margin.
Cameron Sealey scored eight points, handed out nine assists and had three steals. McCorkle and Lauren Skidmore snared five rebounds each, and Rebecca Brown added nine points.
Even though Forestview remains unbeaten, East Gaston still has a chance to share the conference title. If Forestview beats Hunter Huss Tuesday and East Gaston whips Crest, The Warriors can gain a piece of the conference title by beating the Jaguars at Forestview Friday night.
