Lady Raiders lose in tourney Monday
By JIM HEFFNER
- Thu, Feb 21, 2008
Olivia Reid did it to the Lady Raiders again. Reid hit six 3-pointers in the third quarter of their conference tournament game Monday evening to lead the Hunter Huss Huskies to a 71-51 victory over South Point. She made eight consecutive threes in the second half of the game last month won by the Huskies.
The game was close in the first half. Huss took a six-point lead into the locker room at the break, but Reid heated up and put the game out of reach when the teams resumed play.
Shante Crawford led the Raiders with 22 points and CeCe Crenshaw had a season high 15 rebounds. Crawford also contributed nine boards, three assists and three steals. Caitlin Wilson had five blocks for the night.
The Lady Raiders finished their season at 10-13.
Crenshaw, South Point’s only senior, banged the boards for 12 rebounds, hit for nine points, dished out three assists and blocked four shots in the Lady Raiders 58-34 win over North Gaston on Senior Night last Tuesday.
Shante Crawford with 16 points, seven boards, five steals and six blocked shots racked up another superlative game.
Paige Donaldson accounted for 13 points five rebounds and three steals.
All the Raiders contributed to the team victory.
“We played well,” Coach Melinda Wilson said. “We played as a team and the effort assured us a spot in the playoffs. Our younger players again shined, and they are to be congratulated for their contributions.”
The news wasn’t so good Friday night as Crest slammed the Raiders 64-52.
South Point traveled to the Cleveland County school with a depleted squad. Paige Donaldson, Tiffany Jenkins, Shannon Holder and Bailey Bumgardner alls suffered from flu or cold symptoms and did not play. Some of those who did play were also sick.
“We actually played pretty well considering,” Wilson said.
Ironically, South Point, with four, had their lowest turnover total of the year. They also came up with 25 rebounds, 12 steals and nine blocked shots, all excellent totals, but they still came out on the short end.
“They played really good defense,” said Coach Jeff Melton, “You usually win with turnovers that low and blocked shots that high, but we got some easy transition baskets and we hit most of our free throws.”
The Chargers also shot well. Rhodia Hopper hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead all scorers.
Shante Crawford led the scoring with 21 points. The junior guard also totaled six steals, six rebounds and three assists.
Crenshaw corralled another nine rebounds and scored nine points to go along with three steals and two blocks.
Caitlin Wilson, playing sick, had five blocked shots and five rebounds. Hailey Lowe tallied 10 points and played a solid floor game.
South Point’s first tournament game was at Hunter Huss against the Huskies Monday night.
