Red Raiders win home opener 3-1

Hits were scarce Friday afternoon when South Point defeated Kings Mountain 3-1 in its home opener.

Both teams garnered three hits each, but the Raiders made the most of theirs by bunching two of them with an error and a hit batsman to score three runs in the second inning.

After Chris Lane flied out to centerfield, Kings Mountain shortstop Cody Austin booted a grounder off the bat of Watson Lawing, who advanced to second when Nick Demarsico was hit by a pitch from Brantley Blalock. Chris Harkey moved both runners up with a ground out to second base.

Freshman right fielder Derek Treffinger then doubled to left to plate both runs and Matt Darnell followed with a double to knock in Treffinger.

Lane had the other SP hit, a harmless single in the third inning.

The Mounties scored an unearned run in the third, when shortstop Ryan Honeycutt misplayed a slow grounder, Austin walked and KM outfielder Brent Hunt singled to left field.

Belmont Abbey signee Zack Horne started the game for Coach Jason Lineberger’s Red Raiders and went four innings striking out six and walking two. He gave up two of Kings Mountain’s three hits, both singles, and the Mounties’ only run. Darnell pitched a hbitless fifth inning and Lawing finished up, allowing a double and striking out one.

Two KM pitchers gave up two earned runs and one tainted. Blalock and Luke Proctor struck out four and walked one.
