Discovery Place eyes Belmont
From staff reports
- Thu, Mar 13, 2008
BELMONT—Discovery Place is coming to Belmont.
Debra Smul, a spokeswoman for the Charlotte science museum, said Monday that the former Chronicle Mill on Catawba Street would be the site for the new Discovery Place-Kids.
“That’s the location,” said Smul.
She said the site would house multiple hands-on exhibits for children, their parents and caregivers.
“It will feature interactive displays with new experiences for children,” said Smul.
She added that the process is still in negotiation. A precise timetable for the new facility isn’t yet known, she said, but it is coming.
“We’re talking with people right now and gauging their interest,” said Smul.
She said Discovery Place is interested in developing a network of such children’s museums throughout the region.
Also speaking Monday, Belmont Mayor Dr. Richard Boyce said he’s happy for his town.
“I’m very excited about this possibility,” said Boyce. “It fits our vision of the town in general and our vision for our uptown area in particular. We see ourselves as a town that is friendly to family, education and community. This type of facility fits all those areas. It would bring in more children and families to the center of our community. And I think this would greatly benefit our uptown merchants and the entire region as well.”
