R-S Central defeats Red Raiders
By JIM HEFFNER
- Thu, Mar 13, 2008
Zach Horne deserved a better fate. The senior southpaw struck out 12 R-S Central Hilltoppers last Wednesday walked just two, scattered eight hits and gave up two earned runs, yet he lost the game to R-S Central 5-4 on an unearned run in the sixth.
South Point struck first as Chris Lane, in the second inning, was hit by a pitch. The speedy centerfielder immediately swiped second and scored on a double off the right-centerfield fence by Watson Lawing.
Neither team scored in the third, but R-S Central loaded the bases. Horne, however, shut them down without a run.
The Hilltoppers’ second baseman evened the score with a line drive homerun that barely cleared the leftfield fence in the top of the fourth inning. The rest of the inning was uneventful.
Horne, no slouch with the bat, slammed a towering double off the centerfield fence to start the SP fourth. Lane was again hit by a pitch, bringing up Lawing who bunted. The pitcher fielded the bunt and threw it over the third baseman’s head, allowing Evans, who ran for Horne, to score. Lane went to third on the play, and Lawing ended up on second. After Treffinger struck out, Nick Demarsico doubled home two runs, giving the hometown team a 4-1 lead.
William Henderson led off the Hilltoppers fifth by reaching safely on a throwing error by third baseman Chris Harkey. He moved up as Billy Barnard grounded out to second and scored on a line single to left by Keith Snethen. Stephen Crowe laced a hard single to centerfield. Moving Snethen to third. J.P. Conner followed with an RBI single to left. Horne gave up his second walk of the night to Daniel Brown, and ended the inning by whiffing Thompson.
Drew McLaughlin came on in relief of Ryan Arrowood in the fifth and retired the side in order.
Trey Ruppe started the Hilltoppers off with a solid single to center in the sixth inning. After Horne struck out Henderson, Arrowood singled to left. Billy Barnard then grounded out to the pitcher and both runs scored as Snethen slapped a grounder to shortstop Ryan Honeycutt who committed the raiders second error of the game.
South Point was shut down the rest of the way except for a hit batsman in the seventh.
Horne got out of two bases loaded jams during the game, and his control appeared to be improved over his last start.
Last Monday the Raiders walloped Lincolnton 8-2 on the strength of Lawing’s pitching and home runs by Lane and Treffinger.
Lawing pitched five strong innings allowing no earned runs to pick up his second win of the season.
