•I would just like to voice my concerns - I did NOT vote for the parks & rec bond so we could LEASE land from the county that we can’t even use full-time. Artificial turf? I will not vote to re-elect any council member who votes for this.
•Regarding the City of Belmont considering using $600,000 of the recently approved Park & Rec Bond money to install astro turf at South Point High School, I would like to say that this is a very bad idea for many reasons. Here are just a few: It’s just wrong to use city money to improve county property. It’s not benefiting the majority of taxpaying citizens who voted for the bond money. The astro turf will require future maintenance and may be vandalized or damaged requiring expensive ongoing costs. The kids don’t need astro turf, grass is good enough for them, and there are greater needs that astro turf such as new parks, improved programs, and the improvement of existing facilities.
•I would appreciate it if the City Council would listen to the taxpayers and not designate our bond money on “pet projects” which only benefit a small percentage of the population. This is a risky venture and one that should not be taken lightly. Council members, please, please say NO to astro turf. The taxpayers and voting public are counting on you to make the right choice!
•This artificial turf has been empirically and demonstrably shown to cause MRSA. It also poses other health risks. Anyone who cares about kids would be vehemently opposed to this patently fatuous idea, foisted upon far too many other communities elsewhere by a bunch of uncaring, money-worshipping, corporate goons with a slick spiel and a dearth of facts.
•I think that the City should step up to the plate and use bond money to purchase the turf at South Point and also help with the fields that the Optimist Club is building on Boat Club Rd. I have lived here all my life and nothing has changed as far as the parks and rec go. Same story, different year. I have heard about this parks and rec master plan all my life. I think if the parks and rec say “we have a master plan” one more time I will throw up. Everyone is sick and tired of hearing this from them. Enough is enough.
At all the meetings I have attended, and I can tell you it’s a lot, the parks and rec have the same people to oppose what is surely right for this city and our kids, but parks and rec do not want this. Too much work!! Let’s please do what is right for the children of this community and quit procrastinating. For every one person the parks and rec can get to oppose this great opportunity I know there are nine that will support it. Go out and take a survey. Let’s get this done, Belmont, whether the parks and rec support it or not.
•Belmont needs upscale apartment complexes. A residential style community that includes a modern tucked-in pool, fitness center, and business facilities that would appeal to people who seek an apartment lifestyle that doesn’t necessarily involve a brick duplex is highly needed.
•The City of Belmont’s Recreation Department should hold their collective heads in shame.
It is a given that when Belmont Optimist opens Optimist Park on Boat Club Road that the City will request use of the Optimist facilities, yet over the years when the City has been asked to help Belmont Optimist, it is having its hair done that day.
The City understands how passionate Belmont Optimist members are about the kids of this community, they’ve heard from them loud and clear on numerous occasions. Yet no City help is forthcoming.
This is a slap in the face to Belmont Optimist which supports literally hundreds of Belmont kids in Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading, Little League Baseball, Oratorical Contests, and many other youth activities.
The City of Belmont Parks and Recreation Department has essentially abandoned Belmont Optimist, the children involved in the Optimist programs, and Belmont Optimist’s need for assistance. Rudely sweeping them out the City door.
In short, Belmont Parks & Recreation Dept, and Belmont Optimist, are mutually exclusive, and will remain this way due to the close mindedness and unwillingness of the City to help Belmont Optimist.
•The Mount Holly Community Foundation is trying to apply pressure to some city officials in an effort to get Mount Holly to affiliate with the Gaston County Chamber of Commerce, or so I’ve heard. Why would that group embark on such an endeavor? Wouldn’t it be up to the businesses in Mount Holly to make that decision? If the City does affiliate with a Chamber of Commerce, wouldn’t it make more sense to go with the group in Belmont? Is the Foundation now in the hands of incompetents? Inquiring minds want to know.
•The City of Belmont has been promising for over 20 years to help the Optimist with the football programs, and they never have. I just wonder what’s going to happen when the Optimist decide that they no longer want to provide football to the kids of Belmont. That’s something that the city gets free with volunteers helping out. The Optimist does a great service to this community. I’m tired of seeing the city to the Whitewater Park and everywhere else and not taking care of the kids here in Belmont.
I’m sure if it was soccer or something that the city knew how to operate, this wouldn’t be happening.
