Brown slams door on South Point
By JIM HEFFNER

Maybe the East Gaston pitching staff isn’t quite as thin as some people think.
Some think that, after Jay Puckett and A.J. Bailey, the Warriors are without reliable pitchers. D.J. Brown proved just the opposite as he closed down South Point on five hits Friday night and won the game 4-2.
Brown was a surprise starter, and he didn’t even know he was going to pitch until Coach Randy Sellers told him earlier in the day.
“I always knew D.J. was a pretty good pitcher,” said Sellers. “He pitched for the JV team last year and he pitched junior legion ball. And remember, he did start against Cherryville a couple of weeks back.”
Brown walked just three and the runs he allowed were both unearned as his teammates made four errors behind him.
Although the Warrior infield made four errors, a sparkling fielding play by Ben Merritt helped preserve Brown’s win.
After East Gaston had pushed across two runs in both the second and third innings they led 4-1 in the fourth when Chris Lane came up. Lane has been on a tear lately, and he led off the inning with the first of his two hits for the evening, then moved around to third when Brown issued two of his three walks to opposing pitcher Weston Lawing and David Johnson.
The next batter Nick Demarsico chopped a high hopper down the third base line that Merritt leaped high and snagged, then threw to catcher Jason Borjas to nab the runner from third. Borjas quickly fired to first to complete the double play and get Brown out of a tight spot as he struck out the next hitter.
Rickey Martin drove in EG’s first two runs in the second inning after a Borjas single and a SP fielding error. The Warriors tacked up two more unearned runs in the third on an error and a bases loaded walk to Merritt.
Lawing deserved a better fate. He has pitched extremely well in every outing this season and this one was no exception. The sophomore righthander allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out four.

W – D.J. Brown (1-0). L – Weston Lawing (3-1).
