ABC Store to expand

MOUNT HOLLY—“I’ll drink to that.”

And probably that’s what many Mount Holly folks will do when they learn of the impending space increase to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Store, going from pint-sized to gallon-sized.

By late June, the ABC Store, located at 2100 Spring St., just off Tuckaseege Road in the Springs Crossing Shopping Center, will increase its retail sales space from 1,200 square feet to between 2,500 and 2,600 square feet, according to Carlton Broome.

The chairman of the Mount Holly ABC Board, Broome said Monday that the store would acquire the space from Movie Gallery and thus occupy the entire building. The movie rental store vacated the property six months ago, according to ABC Store Manager Tammy Thomas.

“We were fortunate that they closed at just the time we really needed to get some more space,” said Broome. “Rather than getting a new location altogether, this will really save us money. And this spot is a proven location.”

And how. Since opening in October of 2005, the store has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars. Checking her computer, Thomas said the store projects some $1.4 million in gross sales for the 2007-08 fiscal year. Just last month alone, she added, the store brought in $117,374.36 in gross sales.

“We are doing a lot more business than we projected we’d do in this location,” said Broome. “This location means we pick up some business from Gastonia and some from Charlotte. I think it’s that sometimes folks don’t want to have to deal with the traffic in those cities.”

“It’s also our customer service,” said Thomas, smiling.

Stocking shelves, Thomas said her staffers look forward happily to having more room and more products to offer their customers.

“We’re excited about it,” she said.

“We all are,” Broome agreed. “This will mean that our sales floor is nice, neat and updated and separate from our storage area. We want our customers to have a comfortable experience in an attractive, well-lit store.”

For their help, Broome and Thomas thanked Larry Beck and his staff at the Gastonia ABC Store.
