Anniversary
Burmah and Helen Sipe Hager of Mount Holly celebrated their 68th anniversary on April 14.

According to family members, the Hagers have spent nearly seven decades together in ups and downs and all kinds of weather.

The couple married in York, S.C., in 1940.

Burmah Hager is a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Duke Power in 1982.

Helen Hager is a former employee of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Both are charter members of the Second Baptist Church of Mount Holly. In their retirement, they enjoy yardwork and reminiscing about their youth.

Their anniversary was celebrated with a dinner at the Captain’s Cap in Belmont. The event was planned by Mrs. Hager’s sister, Betty Norwood, also of Mount Holly. Her brother, Charles Sipe of Concord, also attended, as did Mr. Hager’s sisters, Banner Blackwell of Mount Holly, Betty Cherry of Belmont and Geneva Bennett of Charlotte and his brother, Roland Hager of Stanley, and several of the couple’s special nieces and nephews and Neva Herms of Belmont, their special friend.

Mrs. Hager recently said that she fell in love with her husband’s pretty eyes and strong, white teeth. Mr. Hager said it was his bride-to-be’s brown eyes and long, dark hair that caught his eye.

There may now be fewer teeth, and the hair may be grey or gone. But the Hagers are still very much in love, and their family members wish them a happy anniversary.

Engagement
The Rev. and Mrs. Mark Andrews of Belmont announce the engagement of their daughter, Courtney Lynn Andrews of Durham.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Alexander Wilson, Jr. of Franklin and the late Rev. and Mrs. William Ed Andrews.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education, she is a teacher at Estes Hills Elementary School in Chapel Hill.

The groom-elect is Phillip Wayne Clapp, also of Durham. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Clapp of Danbury and the grandson of the Rev. and Mrs. Rosser Clapp of Burlington, Garnetta Grubb Bowers of Eden and the late Eddie Lavon Bowers.

Also a graduate of UNC-CH, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in biology, he is a research specialist for the UNC Cystic Fibrosis Research Center in Chapel Hill.

The couple has planned a wedding for July 12 in Pleasant Garden.
