BannerNews staffers win awards

Diane Turbyfill and Thomas Lark were recently recognized by the North Carolina Press Associatin for their work in this publication.

Turbyfill has been with Republic Newspapers for three years, two as editor of The BannerNews and one at The Cherryville Eagle. Lark has been a staff writer in the community for just under a year.

The two shared a second-place award in the NCPA’s 2007 Journalism Contest under the “General News Reporting” category. The pair’s submitted stories covered a drowning last year in Mountain Island Lake in Mount Holly.

Turbyfill won two additional awards in this year’s competition. She took third place for designing a photo page that depicted mill life in Belmont and Mount Holly. Another third place award went to Turbyfill for featuring writing. The article, published in 2007 of The BannerNews, spotlighted the demolition of the Aberfoyle Mill.

This is the fourth award Turbyfill has received since coming to Republic Newspapers. Her first was for designing a special section celebrating the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain.
