Warriors hit hard by Wildcats

With the loss of Daniel Russell to an injury, the East Gaston starting pitching staff is thin at best. After Jay Puckett and A.J. Bailey, Coach Randy Sellers must look to some of his position players for a few innings here and there.

Last Tuesday night, the Warriors felt the effects when North Gaston came up with a 10-run fifth inning to end the ball game with a Wildcat 13-2 victory.

The barrage caught everyone unaware.

Jay Puckett, though not sharp, had given up just three runs prior to the fatal fifth when the roof caved in.

“That explosive offense was a total surprise,” said Coach Randy Sellers. “I knew North Gaston had some good hitters, but I didn’t expect that.”

The Warriors scratched first in the opening inning. Jordan Graham singled, stole second and moved to third as EG loaded the bases with a walk to D.J. Brown and a hit batsman. Ben Merritt lifted a fly ball to centerfield, scoring Graham.

The Wildcats got the run back when an RBI single by Henry Rundio plated Dylan White in the third. White had walked and swiped second. NG got two more runs in the fourth.

Graham knocked in EG’s second run in the fourth before the fifth inning onslaught by North Gaston, highlighted by Andrew Withers 3-run homerun over the leftfield fence.

Freshman Rundio picked up the win, his first, and the Wildcats’ first conference win of the year.

East Gaston loaded the bases in the first and fourth innings but couldn’t pull the trigger when they needed to.

Graham and Stephen Butler had two hits each, and the game saw the return of Trey Deason. Out three weeks with a broken hand, Deason grounded out as a pinch hitter in the firth inning.

The Warriors traveled to Cherryville Wednesday and lost again 6-4 as D.J. Brown and Luis Matinez took over the pitching chores.

East Gaston actually had a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t hold it.

“Cherryville has all that tradition going for them,” Sellers said, “they were playing at home and they were loose.”

This was another game where the Warriors left too many runners aboard.

East Gaston traveled to Hopewell Friday night and lost 11-1.
