BELMONT—“Come on in! We’re glad you’re here.”
So saying, Sallie Stevenson held the door open wide, welcoming folks to the Park Street United Methodist Church Family Life Center. The director of Belmont Parks and Recreation, Stevenson was among the officials on hand Saturday afternoon for Older Americans Day.
“This is the 19th year the city has done this for our older citizens,” she explained. “May is National Older Americans Month. We used to do this at Stowe Park, but weather could make that an iffy situation. So we’re glad to be here at Park Street Methodist and mighty grateful to them.”
Gospel bluegrass music from Mark Templeton, food from Big Man’s Barbecue of Gastonia and door prizes were the order of the day.
“We’re just giving back to our older residents,” said Stevenson, greeting Brenda Robinson of Belmont at the door. “They’ve given so much to our community.”
Inside the fellowship hall, Clarence and Ginger Ladd of Belmont chowed down on hot dogs.
“Don’t tell them I’m not old enough to be here!” Mrs. Ladd joked. “I’m just here for the entertainment.”
Their friend, Ginny Deese of Belmont, laughed along with them.
“It’s the good fellowship that I enjoy the most,” said Deese.
Belmont Parks and Recreation Programs Coordinator Reba Matthews cited other upcoming and ongoing Parks and Rec events for seniors, 55 years of age and older, held at the J. Paul Ford Center on Woodrow Avenue, unless otherwise noted:
•The Gadabouts (for Belmont seniors only) meet on Wednesdays for day trips. City residents pay no fees, while out-of-city residents pay $20.
•Participants in the Senior Stretch exercise program meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-10:15 a.m. In-city residents pay no fees, while those out of the city pay $10 a month.
•Senior line dancing participants meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:15-11 a.m. Fees are the same as those for Senior Stretch.
•And those in the “Aquaducks,” a water aerobics program, meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:45-10:45 a.m., at the Stowe Family YMCA in Mount Holly. Fees are $20 a month for in-city residents and $30 for out-of-city residents.
