Our View
- Thu, May 8, 2008
Americans cast their votes for their candidates of choice Tuesday. But when will our real concerns be addressed?
Does the new president have a chance at unburying us from the early grave we’ve created under the Bush administration?
If economists and reporters are correct, our biggest and most important concern should be oil.
What are you doing to solve the problem?
Do you carpool with other parents when taking your kids to and from school and sporting events?
Will you shop for hybrid vehicles when the time comes to buy a new car?
How far will you go to improve the situation? How far should the government go?
Perhaps if we were given some incentive to take public transportation, we would put up our car keys and replace the key chain with a bus pass.
Personal automobiles could be reserved for road trips and grocery shopping.
Perhaps we could put aside the stigma attached to motorscooters as “liquorcycles.” The small vehicles may not be the hippest modes of transportation but certainly save on gas and pollution.
Belmont and Mount Holly have already been established as high-growth areas. Many of us drive to and from Charlotte for employment and entertainment. But maybe it’s time to add personal restrictions that will boost our country and protect the environment.
At a certain point, government will have to step in and enforce regulations that we as forward-thinking human beings should already been mandating ourselves.
No one wants to be managed by Big Brother. But if we refuse to govern ourselves, who will save us?
