Litter sweep aims to keep Belmont beautiful
By JUDY CLOSSON
- Thu, May 15, 2008
BELMONT—Last month’s City Pride Day was a huge success.
There were 138 volunteers that signed in to help in the annual citywide litter pick-up, held April 26. Participating groups included folks from the Belmont Police and Fire departments, the Reid Community, the JROTC of South Point High School, Boy Scout Troop 56, Belmont Abbey College, the Belmont Women’s and Town and Country Garden clubs, Keep Belmont Beautiful volunteers and KBB board members.
Also that day, Ken Vas and Adrian Miller were among those beautifying the point at the fork of Central Avenue and Main Street.
Belmont Public Works Director David Isenhour assigned volunteers to target areas in and around Belmont. Isenhour said the city picked up 207 bags—a total of 2,070 pounds of trash, including 18 tires and eight appliances.
Volunteers came back with some unusual trash. Members of the ROTC equipped a toy jeep they found with a hubcap and a bone for the hood ornament.
Gift certificates were given for the most unusual trash.
McDonald’ s and Chick-Fil-A donated food coupons to all of the volunteers, as well as a hot dog lunch and entertainment provided by Patrick Motter of Belmont Abbey College.
McKenney-Salinas Honda gave $500 for the event. Honda is a national sponsor of the Great American Clean-Up, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful.
KBB is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and holds City Pride Day each year to fulfill its part of the Great American Clean-up.
