Even though Michelle Primm gave up a three-run homer in the first inning, she never had a thought about losing the game.
“I knew we’d come back and hit,” she said. “I was shaken a little, but I knew we could hit Hunter (Melissa), and I knew we’d get those runs back. I was determined they wouldn’t get anymore.”
Primm didn’t allow Crest much of anything after the first inning, and the Warriors went on to score seven times in the 7-3 win. Crest got just one hit and three base runners the rest of the way.
EG (20-3) whipped the Chargers (17-8) for the second consecutive year in the championship game. They are headed into the state playoffs on a winning streak that has reached nine.
Gracie Pitchford hit the homerun following base hits by Hunter and Bailey Smith, but Primm closed the barn door after those horses got out.
The Warriors played another sterling defensive game. Freshman right fielder Lindsey Greeson made the play of the game by cutting down a base runner at third for the final out of the third inning.
Primm struck out three but walked only one. She gave up just four hits. Taylor Hawley went 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs to lead East Gaston. The Sealey twins, Greeson, Megan Soots and Blair Collier accounted for the remainder of the Warrior hits.
Soots suffered a high ankle sprain in the Ashbrook game and was told to sit this one out, but the gutsy little catcher wouldn’t hear of it. She caught her usual stellar game, and most didn’t even know she was hurt.
“I told them they played like true Warriors,” said Coach Richard Hawley. “Once we got through our lineup the first time, that’s when we got going. That’s the way it usually works out.”
On the way to the championship game, the Warriors swatted Ashbrook 11-2 on Wednesday.
Cameron Sealey led the 16-hit attack with 4-for-4, including a double, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. At one point Sealey, a right-handed batter came to the plate and took a left-hand stance, everybody in the ballpark knew she was going to bunt, which she did, and beat it out for a hit.
Ashbrook scored first, getting a run on two straight hits, but East Gaston stormed back in the top of the inning. Tameron Sealey singled over third base, Hannah McGee bunted her over to second and Cameron Sealey singled to center, taking second on the throw to third. Primm walked to load the bases. After Taylor Hawley popped up for the second out, Greeson hit a grounder to third, reaching first as the third baseman couldn’t come up with it. Tameron Sealey scored on the error, tying the score at one.
The Warriors built on that and scored in every inning, including three in the second.
Primm was, again, the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts and just five hits. Her teammates did not commit an error. Primm also had two hits in four trips to the plate.
Collier contributed two hits in three at-bats with a pair of stolen bases and two RBIs.
“I’m proud of the way this team played on defense,” Hawley said.
Ashbrook’s Allie Short, coming off a 14-strikeout performance against South Point, was the losing pitcher.
“Allie’s a good pitcher,” Hawley said, “but it’s hard to get ‘up’ for big games two days in a row.”
