String Bean to open on Main
By THOMAS LARK
- Thu, May 22, 2008
BELMONT—Downtown Belmont is getting fresh.
A fresh market, that is, and in a brand-new location. Chad Hutcheson, coordinator of the Belmont Fresh Market, announced Thursday that he and wife Katy will be the new owners of the Emporium On Main, now rechristened the String Bean Market and Deli. The Hutchesons purchased the building, located at 106 N. Main St., from Ellen and Russell Fleming.
The String Bean will feature a delicatessen, produce, meats, beer and other tasty items associated with the Belmont Fresh Market. But most important of all, the wine—a mainstay of the Emporium—will remain, Mr. Hutcheson said.
“That’s the first thing everybody keeps asking me about,” he said, laughing. “Yes, the wine will stay. I’ve always had a real passion for food and wine.”
Hutcheson puts that passion and expertise to good use as an instructor at the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte.
Ted Hall of the Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce said he was happy for all concerned.
“The Hutchesons plan to renovate this summer,” said Hall, “bringing a unique, new business to historic downtown Belmont.”
He said that the Flemings described their decision as “taking a step toward retirement.”
Hall added that the other half of the redesigned building would be filled by Just Hardwoods Flooring, which is relocating from its site on South Main Street across from Stowe Park.
