Labor Day festival
Ranlo will hold a Labor Day festival on Friday Aug. 26, 6-10 p.m. and Sat. 3 to 10 p.m. The admission is free but there is a $10 charge for an unlimited ride armband. Advance purchase will be from Aug. 15-28 at Ranlo Town Hall (1624 Spencer Mtn. Rd) from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. At the fair, armbands will be $15. Entertainment on Friday is The Sonshyne Boyz and Sat.’s band is Firecreek. The town is also looking for more arts and crafts vendors for their festival. Charges for a space of 16ft x 12ft is $20 for two days. Forms may be picked up from Ranlo Town Hall or by calling (704)824-3461 for more information.

THELMA SHELL

CHARLOTTE—Thelma Louise Hager Shell, 90, of 4926 Mount Holly Huntersville Road, died Monday April 28, 2008. She was born in Lincoln County, daughter of the late John Henry and Lottie Norment Hager. She was wife of the late John J. Shell and was preceded in death by one sister Mary Elizabeth Hager.



She was a homemaker and a member of Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church.



A graveside service was held Wednesday April 30, 2008 at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. T.J. Thompson officiating.



She is survived by one son Ronald Eugene Shell and wife, Robin, of Charlotte; two granddaughters Misty Burns and husband, Steve, of Clover, S.C., and Kimberly Tuttle and husband, Thomas, of Charlotte; and three great-grandchildren Lily Burns, Cameron Sanders, and Riley Tuttle.

THOMAS FRANKLIN

MOUNT HOLLY—Thomas Edward Franklin, 84, a resident of the Stanley Total Living Center, formerly of Mount Holly, died Tuesday April 29, 2008. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Joseph Edward and the late Ruth Smith Franklin and was preceded in death by one sister Gaynelle McPherson and two brothers Lewis and Little Joe Franklin.



He was a retired Supervisor with American and Efird Incorporated. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of Westview Presbyterian Church.



Funeral services were held Friday May 2, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Gilley officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.



He is survived by his wife of 58 years Katie Guffee Franklin of the Stanley Total Living Center; one daughter Pat Jones and husband, Buddy, of Belmont; two grandchildren Brent Jones and wife, Ashley, of Gastonia and Christy Boyd and husband, Michael, of Belmont; three great-grandchildren Avery and Lillian Boyd and Kendall Jones; two sisters Velva Bynum of Gastonia and Mary Waters of Garner; two brothers Bobby Franklin and wife, Violet, of Gastonia and Jim Franklin of Sylmar, CA.

MARGARET MCJUNKINS

BELMONT—Margaret Martin McJunkins, age 86, of Gaither Rd. died Thursday, May 1, 2008. She was a native of Gaston County, daughter of the late John Martin and the late Pearl Miller Martin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Rollins; sisters; Helen Martin, Ann Pressley and Clara Morrow; and brothers Paul and Lawrence Martin.



McJunkins was a member of South Point Baptist Church and a former member of Harvest Church in Charlotte.



A funeral service was held Sunday, May 4. 2008 at South Point Baptist Church. Burial followed at Evergreen “A Quiet Place” in Belmont. Dr. James C. Hilton and the Rev. Ed Chidister officiated.



Survivors include her husband of 64 years Ernest William McJunkins, children: Nancy White and husband, Lowell, of Belmont, Martha “Sissy” Frye Ritchie and husband, Phillip, of Belmont, Ernest W. McJunkins, Jr. and wife, Terri, of Belmont; sister, Betty Killian; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

FRANCES MCCOTTER

MOUNT HOLLY—Frances Lowe McCotter, 92, of 201 East Catawba Drive, died Friday May 2, 2008. She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Charles Forney and Maggie Bumgardner Lowe.



She was wife of the late Richard Orson McCotter and was a member of Tuckaseege Baptist Church.



Funeral services were held Monday May 5, 2008 at Tuckaseege Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Arrowood, the Rev. Marty Johnston, and the Rev. Jason Marlowe officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.



She is survived by six children Marilyn Cavanagh and husband, Patrick, of Spartanburg, S.C., Lane McCotter and wife, Kathy, of Midway, Utah, Nancy M. Killian of McAdenville, Steve McCotter and wife, Becky, of Mount Holly, Suzan Loftin and husband, Steve, of Mount Holly, and Lynn McCotter and wife, Michelle, of Mount Holly; one sister Lois Crawford of Mount Holly; one brother Boyd Lowe of Winston Salem; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM MORROW

MOUNT HOLLY—William Tim Morrow, 74, formerly of Mount Holly, died Thursday May 1, 2008. He was born in Cherokee County, son of the late Morgan Hamilton and the late Inez Murphy Morrow. He was husband of the late Doris Fuller Morrow and was preceded in death by one son Dennis Morrow, five sisters, and three brothers.



Funeral services were held Sunday May 4, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Cope officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.



He is survived by one daughter Rita Mann and husband, Kevin, of Mooresville; one son Randy Morrow and wife, Cheri, of Charlotte; four sisters; eight grandchildren, and three-great grandchildren.

HAZEL SPARGO

BELMONT—Hazel  Lucille  Willard  Spargo, 84, of 119 Cody Lane, died May 1, 2008. She was born Oct. 4, 1923 in Gaston Co; daughter of the late Jake and the late Maggie Smith Willard.



She was preceded in death by her husband John Frank Spargo Jr; two sons Larry Franklin Spargo and Roger Terry Spargo; and two brothers Clyde and Eddie Willard. She was a retired textile employee and member of Sharon Free Will Baptist Church.



Funeral services conducted by the Revs. Odell Cook, Marvin Carson, Ralph Carver, and Jim Messer were held Sunday, May 4, at Sharon Free Will Baptist Church. Interment followed in Goshen Cemetery.



Survivors include her children Brenda Sutton and husband, David, of Belmont, Mickey Spargo and wife, Jeannie, of Gastonia, Butch Spargo and wife, Euline, of Belmont, Kevin Spargo and wife, Kathy, of Belmont, and Tim Spargo and wife, Rita, of Belmont; two sisters Mary Calvert and husband, J.C., of Gastonia, and Billie Mauney and husband, Joe, of Gastonia; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

MARY HARKEY

CHARLOTTE—Mary Louise White Harkey, 84, of 343 Pine Island Drive, died Sunday May 4, 2008 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Mecklenburg County, daughter of the late Jake Reid White Sr. and Mary Jane Thomas White.



She was a retired secretary and a member of the Thrift Baptist Church where she served as librarian for over 30 years and was very involved in other church activities.



She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Troy Blanton Harkey Sr.; two sons, Troy Blanton Harkey Jr. and his wife Dina and David Wayne Harkey and his wife Kitty, all of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Benjamin Harkey of Charlotte, Matthew Harkey of Chapel Hill, Eric and Sierra Harkey both of Charlotte.



The funeral is at 2 p.m. today, Thursday May 8, 2008 at Thrift Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Lathan officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 Thursday at the church.
