Holiday Library Closings All Gaston County Public Library locations will be closed in observance of Christmas, from Wednesday, December 24, through Friday, December 26.

Summer programs
The Mount Holly Parks and Recreation Department and Challenger Sports will once again hold the summer soccer camp, July 21-25.
There will be two half-day sessions, one for children 6-9 years of age, and one for children 10-14. The 6-to-9-year-old session is 9 a.m.-noon, and the 10-to-14 session is 5:30-8:30 p.m. Both camps will be held at Gene Hawkins Field at Tuckaseege Park.
The camp’s $99 cost includes a soccer ball and T-shirt.

Mount Holly Parks and Rec will also host a free self-defense class for adults, June 12, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Tuckaseege Community Center.

Art reception
The 2008 Art by J Art Show and reception will be held at Stowe Manor on Sunday, May 25 from 2 to 6 p.m.
The works of 120 art students from ages 6 to 18 will be featured. This year’s theme is “East meets West, the Art of Asia.” The theme is reflected in the still lifes the students drew and also their raku clay work. Memorial Day Service
The Auten—Stowe American Legion Post in Belmont will host a Memorial Day service Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont.
Members of the community are encouraged to attend the event.
Mayor Richard Boyce and former mayor Billy Joye will welcome those in attendance.
South Point Navy ROTC will present colors, and the Belmont Police Explorers will say the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Rev. Joe Lawing of Unity Baptist Church will be the speaker.
Josh Darnelle will provide music, and Post Commander Larry Norwood will make special remarks.

Carillon series
Sunday, the First Presbyterian Church welcomes Mary McFarland and Suzanne Fairbairn for the first of three carillon concerts. The 7 p.m. concert is part of the church’s carillon series, “Barefeet, Blankets and Bells.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and come at 6:30 p.m. for a free hot dog cook-out. Tower tours are offered for those who’d like to see how the carillon is played.

First Aid and CPR
Families and individuals who want to learn first aid and CPR are invited to an event Thursday, May 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 807 South Point Road. The class is for ages 14 and up and doesn’t include actual certification. Cost is $12. Participants will receive a compression kit, DVD, wallet card and safety guide.
The event is sponsored by the American Red Cross and the Belmont Parish Nurse Ministry.

Health and Fitness Day
National Employee Health and Fitness Day will be celebrated Friday, May 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Walks will be held to commemorate the day at these locations: BB&T Bank in downtown Gastonia, Stowe Park in Belmont, YMCA in Cherryville and Martha Rivers Park. Free snack bags and pedometers will be given while supplies last.

Baccalaureate Service
South Point High School Baccalaureate Service for Seniors, their parents the and community will be Sunday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Belmont. A reception will follow the service. Speaker will be Derwin Gray, former Carolina Panthers football player. The National Champion South Point High School Chamber Choir will perform in the service, and the South Point High’s Jazz Band will entertain at reception.

Bottle cap creations
Learn the craft of making bottle caps into unique art and wearable accessories. A free event devoted to this craft will be held May 29, 4-5, 4-5 p.m., at the Mount Holly Public Library at 245 W. Catawba Ave. Kids in grades six through 12 are invited and encouraged to bring friends. All supplies will be provided. Registration is ongoing.

Cheerleading clinic
The South Point High Varsity Cheerleading Squad will host its first-ever cheerleading clinic.
The event will be held June 11, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the school. Children from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to participate. Those attending will learn official Red Raider cheers and dances. The cost is $25. Participants will get instruction, refreshments, a T-shirt and a commemorative photograph.
