Class reunion The South Point High School class of 1983 will have its 25-year reunion, Oct. 4.
The barbecue dinner and dance event will be held 7 p.m.-midnight at the American Legion Hall (near the tennis courts) in Belmont. Tickets are $25 each.
Preceding this event will be the annual homecoming game, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., at SPHS Stadium. Classmates will also be attending this.

Obituaries
GERTRUDE BASS
BELMONT—Gertrude High Bass, 95, of 1528 South Point Road, died Monday May 12, 2008. She was born in Peachland, daughter of the late Frank and Lona Carpenter High and was the wife of the late Samuel W. Bass. She was preceded in death by five brothers Jim, Jack, Thurman, Graham, and Bill High and three sisters Pauline Edwards, Fannie Lee Davis, and Nell Bowers.
She was a homemaker and a member of South Point United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters Eloise Williams of Charlotte and Martha Hamby and husband, Dwight, of Dallas; two sons Perry Bass and wife, Brenda, of Belmont and Joe Bass and wife, Claudette, of Mount Holly; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Williams, Colette Graham, Sam Williams, Cindy Bass, Melissa Ketchum, Christopher Hamby, and Tracy Chaney; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday May 16, 2008 at the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly with the Rev. Gerald Ramsey officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

MARY SMITH
WINSTON-SALEM—Mary Forney Smith, 68, of 3221 Shaftesbury Lane, died May 12, 2008. She was born in Gaston County to the late Theo and Lena Goodson Forney.
She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life where she was a graduate of Winston Salem Teachers College (WSSU) and from which she was a retired librarian.
Smith was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served on the Communion Stewardess Board, United Methodist Women, and was active in many other capacities. In the community she was a member of the Winston Salem State Alumni Association, Kimberly Park Chapter.
Surviving are her husband Hugh Smith Jr.; two sons, Jeffrey Smith of Winston-Salem and Jerome Smith of Kernersville; one daughter, Jacqueline (Evan) Toulon of Sugar Hill, Ga.; a sister, Mabel McNeil of Belmont; one brother, Carl Forney of Gastonia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 15, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church of Winston Salem with the Rev. Donald Jenkins officiating and interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be forwarded to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2400 Dellabrook Rd., Winston Salem, N.C. 27105.

WILLIAM MCCLAIN
WALHALLA, S.C.—William Mack McClain, 78, of 403 Forest Acres Circle, Walhalla, SC, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008. A native of Mount Holly, McClain was the son of the late Eugene Worsham and the late Mary Willette McClain. In addition to his parents, McClain was predeceased by a daughter, Julia McClain Shelton.
McClain was a senior nuclear operator for Duke Power and was of the Presbyterian faith.
In addition to his wife Dorothy Cheshire McClain, he is survivied by his son, Eugene McClain of Charleston, S.C.; daughters: Linda McClain of Walhalla, S.C. and Lisa Lange of Alpharetta, GA,; sister, Mary Jean Surber of Charlotte, and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 16, 2008 from the Chapel of Davenport Funeral Home, Walhalla, S.C. with burial following in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

MARY THRIFT
BELMONT—Mary Thrift, 84, formerly of Belmont, died Saturday May 17, 2008. She was born in Rutherfordton Co., daughter of the late Lewis and Reatha McSwain and was preceded in death by her husband William C. Thrift.
She was a member of Lighthouse Full Gospel Church in Mount Holly.
Survivors include four children Billy F. Thrift of Stanley, Reatha Poovey and husband, Phil, of Dallas, Frances Oliver of Belmont, David Thrift and wife, Derinda, of Wilmington; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate her life was held Tuesday May 20, 2008 at the Lighthouse Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Herman Winkler officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.
