Big Sweep
Keep Belmont Beautiful is beginning fall with the “Big Sweep.”
The “Big Sweep” is done all over the state on Oct. 4 and is the cleaning of the state waterways. “Litter Sweep” is a state program whereby roadways are cleaned up, Sept. 20 through Oct. 4.
KBB combines both events on Oct. 4. About 90 volunteers came out last fall.
Participants will meet at Stowe Park in Belmont, 9-11 a.m., to receive bags, gloves and an assigned area for picking up litter. There is no rain date.
Groups and individuals are needed. Groups are asked to call KBB at (704)825-8587 and give an approximate count of those that will be helping.

•Downtown Belmont looks gorgeous! The brick flowerboxes are filled with bright, blooming flowers, and everything looks great. But what about the Belmont sign on N.C. 74? You drive into town from Charlotte and spot this old wooden sign that looks weather beaten. It appears to be on the brink of falling down.

It’s time to buck up and buy a sign that indicates how aesthetically pleasing this city is, and make sure it’s visible as soon as you get here.

•A 40-hour workweek for Mount Holly—now does that not sound like a bunch of crap? If it was properly done, it’s possible it would work. But the feeling I’m getting is that it will be a 50-hour workweek.

You’re going to work four 10s but not pure four 10s. You’re going to work a half of a shift of people on Monday and Friday. You’re going to work five 10-hour days. So instead of 40 hours you’re going to work 50 hours. Tell me how that’s going to save gas. Instead of having three people riding around in a truck doing nothing, there’s going to be two people riding in a truck doing nothing. It’s the same difference—40 or 50 except you’re wasting more gas at 50. Come on, Mount Holly. Wake up.

•My family recently moved to Belmont. Last weekend we were burning up and looking to cool off in a pool or lake. We couldn’t figure out where in this city to go.

It seems there are docks and ramps for boats and fishing, but where can someone swim?

To find a pool in the city limits, it seems you have to pay hundreds of dollars for a private membership or leave town.

I know a city park is planned alongside the river. I just hope it includes a public swimming area.

•Well here we go again cutting benefits from employees of the great city of Mount Holly. What is the council thinking? What? What? What?

First of all, you give a pitiful raise. I believe it’s three percent this year. So you saved two percent overall growth and now you cut out the dental insurance. I would think the two percent you saved by not giving an adequate raise would more than cover that plus give you money to buy another plaque to accommodate yourselves about how great you are.

It’s a darn shame they call upon all the city workers like they did during the last tornado to get the job done, but then they just want to slap them in the face. Slap. Slap. Slap.

It’s a shame. The city used to be a great place to work, but not anymore.
