Bingo is held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Gaston County Senior Center.
Old friends are invited to play bingo, canasta, Scrabble, Boggle, poker, Jenga, checkers, ping-pong and more. Or bring your favorite game and teach the group. No partners are required, and admission is free. Prizes are also awarded.

WILLIAM LEE JORDAN

MOUNT HOLLY—William Lee Jordan, 87, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008. He was born in Gaston County son of the late William C. and Ruth Panel Jordan. He was preceded in death by two wives Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Jordan and Frances McKellop Jordan; son, Kenneth Lee Jordan; and brother, Robert Jordan.



Jordon was an electrical contractor and former owner and operator of Jordan Electric. He was also a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Mooresville. He was also a U.S. Army WW II veteran.



Jordon is survived by one daughter, Sheila Selle and husband, Jay, of Cornelius; son, Steven Wayne Jordan of Denver; step-daughter, Linda Stiles and husband, Bob, of Charlotte; two step-sons, Nathan Martin and wife, Myra, of Stanley and Dale Martin of Charlotte; two sisters, Wilma Rick of Mount Holly and Betty Lybrand of Fort Benning, Ga.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.



Funeral services were Saturday June 7, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly with the Rev. Danny Stephenson officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.

NINA MCDANIEL

BELMONT—Nina Rhea Hendrix McDaniel, 59, of 3040 Perfection Place Court, died Saturday, May 31, 2008. She was a native of Gaston County, and the daughter of the late James E. Hibberts and the late Mavis Nina Wood Hibberts.



McDaniel attended Hunter Huss High School and resided most of her life in Gaston County. Nearly 20 years ago she joined the family of Holy Angels in Belmont, where she spent the last 10 years as the group home manager of Southpoint Group Home. She retired from Holy Angels in 2007.



Survivors include her son, James Robert “Bobby” Hendrix of Belmont; brother, Jimmy Hibberts and wife, Linda, of Wilmington; brother, Mark Hibberts and his wife, Joyce, of Greensboro; brother, Donald Hibberts of Gaston County; stepmother, Dessie Hibberts of Mobile, Alabama; stepbrothers, Kevin Kimbrell, Benjamin Kimbrell, Larry Kimbrell and Doug Kimbrell; and many nieces and nephews.



The funeral was held Friday, June 6, 2008 at Bumgardner Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Belmont. The officiating clergy was Chaplain Dennis R. Kuhn.

IDA ROBINSON

GASTONIA—Ida Jackson Robinson, 90, of 3235 Hickory Grove Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008. She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late William Augustus and Sarah Margaret Jackson Robinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John W. Robinson Sr. and Robert Samuel Robinson and two sisters, Eva Robinson Wilkinson and Martha Jane Robinson Clemmer.



She was a retired medical records librarian and a member of Goshen Presbyterian Church in North Belmont.



Survivors include two nephews, John W. Robinson Jr. and Fred A. Clemmer Jr., both of Gastonia; one niece, Jane Wilkinson Socier of Kaw Kalin, Mich.



Funeral services were held Friday, June 6, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly with the Rev. Mike Moreau officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.

HAZEL ALBERT

DALLAS—Hazel Berline Rogers Albert, 81, of 1411 Mayberry Road, formerly of Asheville, died Thursday, June 5, 2008. Rogers was born in Asheville, daughter of the late Ben and Mattie Leslie Rogers. She was wife of the late Joseph “Joe” Albert and was preceded in death by one son, Jackie Laws and one sister, Ruth Williams.



She was a retired practical nurse, a member of Community Baptist Church in Dallas, and former member of Trinity Baptist Church in Asheville.



Survivors include one brother, Richard “Dick” Rogers and wife, Shirley, of Dallas; three grandchildren: Tim Laws, Teresa Corn, and Leslie Hawn, all of Asheville; six great- grandchildren; and niece, Linda “Bucky” Broome of Easley, S.C.



The funeral service was held Sunday June 8, 2008 at Community Baptist Church in Dallas with the Rev. Matt Seigle officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.



Memorials may be made to the Community Baptist Church Building Fund 823 Dallas-Stanley Highway Dallas N.C., 28034.

EDWARD MCLEAN

BELMONT—Edward Clyde McLean, 77, died  Thursday, June 5, 2008. He was a native of Swain County and the son of the late Gordon L. McLean and the late Ella Mae Jenkins McLean. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Viola Adams.

McLean retired from the United States Army after 20+ years of service and from Duke Power after 20+ years of service.



Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mitsuyo A. McLean; son, Thomas Rickie McLean of Dalzell, S.C.; daughter, Jeanette McLean Lyle and husband, Kevin, of Mount Holly; grandchildren, Caleb McLean Lyle and Carson Randall Lyle; and brother-in-law, Jerry Adams of Belmont.



The funeral was held Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Bumgardner Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Belmont. Interment was at Gaston Memorial Park. The officiating clergy were the Rev. Linwood Lavender and the Rev. Tim Parker.



TOMMY BALLARD

GASTONIA—John Thomas “Tommy” Ballard, 80, died June 5, 2008. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late James Avery and Lottie Bumgardner Ballard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Bishop Ballard; two brothers, Harold and Herman Ballard; one sister, Emily Williams Ball; and one daughter-in-law, Trishia Rhyne Ballard.



He was a retired supervisor with Norfolk Southern Railway after 37 years of service, served in the US Army during World War II, and was a 33rd degree Mason and Shriner, where he was a member of the Lowell Masonic Lodge # 590. He was a member of Berea Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.



Survivors include two sons, Larry Ballard of Dallas and Michael (Spook) Ballard of Gastonia; one daughter, Linda Ballard Frontauria and husband, Dominick, of Mount Holly; six grandchildren, Jacob Ballard, Derek Ballard, Becki Heffner and husband, John, Lea Orr and husband, Kevin, Dana Moody and husband, Sean, Sarah Morris and husband, Kelly; and seven great-grandchildren.



The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mike Forrester and was held Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Berea Baptist Church. Interment with full Masonic Rites followed in the church cemetery.

BENJAMIN MILLER

MOUNT HOLLY—Benjamin (Benny) Franklin Miller, 74, of 411 Timberlane Drive, died Friday, June 6, 2008. He was born in Gaston County son of the late Leroy Hampton and the late Mary Abernathy Miller. 



He was a retired supervisor with Duke Energy, a US Marine Corp veteran, a member of the First United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Mount Holly Life Saving Crew and Fire Department, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.



He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Millie) Taylor Miller; one son, M. Dean Miller of Mount Holly, one brother, Charles Miller and wife, Patricia, of Stanley; nephew and adopted son, Alex Taylor of Charlotte; and an aunt, Catherine Long of Denver. 



Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mitch Murrow officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

LEROY WYNN

MCADENVILLE—Leroy Wynn, 73, died  Friday, June 6, 2008. He was a native of Cumberland County and the son of the late Willie Wynn and the late Esther Mundy Wynn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sarah Ellizabeth Tucker.



Wynn enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1955. He was stationed on the USS Manatee and served in the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge in January 1960, he worked for Pharr Yarns in McAdenville and retired after 40 years of service as plant manager. He then began working for Dixie Yarns Rex Plant in Ranlo for the next five years.



He played softball across the country for the McAdenville Reds in the World Industrial Slow Pitch League and was voted All Tournament Manager and MVP many times. In 1963 they won the World Industrial League Slow Pitch Championship with Wynn pitching throughout the six game tournament. He was named MVP during this tournament and chosen for the league’s All Star Team. He went on to coach McAdenville’s Green Team and carried them to the championship game where they challenged the McAdenville Reds.



Wynn was also a member of the American Legion Post 144 in Belmont and the “Lunch Bunch” Golf Team at Green Meadows Golf Club in Mount Holly.



Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Joyce Wynn of the home; sons, Del Wynn and wife, Karen, of Belmont and son Leroy Lamar Wynn and wife, Janice, of Boiling Springs, S.C.; daughters, Cheryl Davis and husband, Larry, of Shelby, Cheryll Shull and husband, Kenny, of Iron Station, Vicki Tucker and husband, Greg, of Gastonia, and Remetta Sharpe of Belmont; grandchildren, Ryan Legere and husband, Michael, of Charleston, S.C.; Kyle Travis of Shelby, Brian Shull of Cornelius, Jennifer and Brad Wynn of Belmont, Emilee Tucker of Gastonia, Matt Sharpe of Belmont, Amanda, Josh and Kimberly Wynn of Boiling Springs, S.C.; and one sister, Juanita Wynn Branham of Springwood Community, Gastonia.



The funeral was held Monday, June 9, 2008 at Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia. Interment was at Gaston Memorial Park. The officiating clergy were the Rev. David Clippard and the Rev. Walt Griggs of Woodlawn Baptist Church, of Lowell.

JEFFREY LANFORD

DENVER—Jeffrey Scott Lanford, 48, died, June 8, 2008. He was the son of Barbara Evington Lanford of Dallas and the late Joseph C. Lanford.  He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Elizabeth Evington Huffstetler and his sister, Stephanie Lanford Putnam. 



Landford was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist in Terrell and was a 15 year heart transplant survivor. 



He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Rebecca “Becky” Rimmer Lanford; three children, Jeffrey Ryan Lanford of Huntersville, Jeremy Benfield and wife, Star, of Stanley, and Brandi Benfield Maxwell of Alexis; one sister, Rhonda Lanford Jackson and husband, James, of Belmont; and three grandchildren, Joshua Benfield, Landon Maxwell and Madison Maxwell. 



Funeral services were held Tuesday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church, of Terrrell, with Dr. Robert Kerr officiating.

SARAH BUMGARDNER

RALEIGH—Sarah Padgett Bumgardner died June 2, 2008. Bumgardner was born on Feb. 19, 1931 to the late Clarence and Estelle Padgett in Shelby and grew up in Lowell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bumgardner; sisters, Patty Davis and Virginia Luck; brothers, Charles and Clarence (Vic) Jr. Padgett; sister-in-law, Faye Horton; brother-in-law, Noah Huffstetler Jr.; niece, Meredith McBryde; and nephews, Michael and Jon Padgett.



Bumgardner was a teacher in the Gaston County School System for 19 years. She also gave to the needy whether it was a meal, a bag of groceries, or the assistance to find scholarship money.

Bumgardner graduated from Sacred Heart College of Belmont and obtained her Masters in Education from UNCC and her Education Specialist degree from Appalachian State University.



Survivors include daughters, Jo Ann Gardner of Raleigh, daughter and son-in law Kelly and David Lingerfelt of Raleigh, and daughter and son-in-law Julia and husband Jim, and and grandsons, Travis and Nathan Benfield.



Funeral services were held Wednesday June 4, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Mount Holly. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.
