Drowned man identified

BELMONT—More information has come to light in connection with a recent evident drowning near Belmont.

Ronald Ernest Butler, 52, of Charlotte, was identified Tuesday as the victim, according to Sgt. Chris Reynolds of the Gaston County Police Department.

“Nothing looks to be unusual,” said Reynolds. “There appears to be no foul play involved.”

He added that while Butler evidently drowned Aug. 23, the precise cause of death (such as a medical condition, for example) isn’t known. More details should emerge, he said, pending a final autopsy report from the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Reynolds said Butler’s body was found at about 7 a.m. that Saturday morning near the Seven Oaks Bridge on South New Hope Road at the Gaston County line, just south of Belmont and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Reynolds said Butler was floating in the water. The GCPD was notified by a boater on Lake Wylie.
