East Gaston Warriors loses to Charlotte Latin
By JIM HEFFNER
- Thu, Sep 4, 2008
CHARLOTTE—Even though hotshot quarterback Braden Hansen has gone on to UNC Chapel Hill, Charlotte Latin still has one of the best football teams around.
Last Friday they showed their strength by defeating East Gaston 57-0.
“They’re one of the top five programs in the state,” said EG coach Eric Tippett.
Tippett’s team is, once again, riddled with injuries, but he never uses injuries as an excuse. “We’re pretty banged up right now, but we’re going to improve,” he said.
Starting quarterback Da Da Crawford, who missed most of last year with a leg injury, was hurt again last week in a scrimmage game.
“He wasn’t able to take a single snap,” said Tippett.
Latin came up with 137 yards total offense to zero for the Warriors. East Gaston helped Latin by turning the ball over three times. By the end of the third quarter they were behind 30-0.
Latin scored almost every way possible: safety, blocked punt, rushing and passing. Even though the Hawks lost all but one offensive starter from last years’ state championship team, they are still a force in prep football.
“They have an exceptional football team,” Tippett said.
Latin even turned its only mistake of the game into a score. In the first quarter, they were driving and fumbled the ball on the 1-yard line of East Gaston. The Warriors recovered the ball, but, on their second offensive play, the ball was snapped over the head of quarterback John Floyd, out of the end zone for a safety.
For the game, Latin outgained the Warriors 308-81 and gave up just two plays of 10 yards or more to the Warriors.
The Warriors host Burns High School Thursday night.
