Church yard sale The Faith Ablaze Four-Square Church Women’s Ministry will have a yard sale, Sept. 6. The event will be held 7 a.m. to noon and features clothes, toys, furniture, electronics, tools and more. A bake sale and hot dog sale will also take place.

L.W. CARTRETT
MOUNT HOLLY—L.W. (Junior) Cartrett, 73, of 111 Pat Nixon Circle, died Aug. 25, 2008. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Bardon Lura and Macie Nixon Cartrett, and was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Ella Mae Bell Cartrett.
He was a retired law enforcement officer with over 35 years of service, with the Gaston County Rural Police. He was a former police chief with the town of Dallas, a detective with the Gaston and Lincoln Sheriff’s office, and in the state of Georgia. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church in Mount Holly.
Survivors include two daughters, Rita Burgin and husband Bruce of Maiden, Diana Whitesides and husband Gene of Lincolnton; a son, Charles Eric Cartrett of Grovetown, Ga.; six grandchildren, Michael and Daniel Lowery, David Dellinger, Dylan Higdon, Brian and Ciara Cartrett; two great grandchildren, Brooke Lowery and Jeffrey Dellinger; and two brothers, Johnny D. Cartrett of Lincolnton and Franklin Gene Cartrett of Mount Holly.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Laughter Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment followed in Pineview Cemetery.

FLEETA STEWART
BELMONT—Fleeta Robinson Stewart, 91, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Caldwell Robinson and Gladys Goins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Luther G. Stewart; a granddaughter, Sharon Culp Ruppe; and an infant sister and brother; Inez and Harvey Robinson.
Stewart was a long-time member of Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charlotte.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Gary and Audrey Stewart of Belmont, Patty Christmas of Charlotte, Beverly and Bill Culp of Harrisburg, Joyce and Jim Antley of Belmont; sister, Rosa Wilkinson of Charlotte; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at the Bumgardner Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors. Pastor John Jackson officiated. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont.

MADGE ARMSTRONG
BELMONT—Madge Hedrick Armstrong, 95, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. A native of Clover, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Miles A. and Edith Maxwell Hedrick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin L. Armstrong; sisters, Vernie Ingram, Wilda Mitchell and Sue Pickett; and brothers, Miles Bud Hedrick, John Hedrick and Ralph Hedrick.
She was a long time member of Unity Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Training Union. She was a member of the choir and also sang with The Joy Singers at First Baptist Church, Belmont. She retired from textiles.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Cary Diggs of Bessemer City, Ann and Jim McClure of Gastonia and Millie and Art Shoemaker of Belmont; grandchildren, Pamela D. Trakas, Gina D. Patton, LeeAnn B. Guice. G. Lee Brown, Kecia B. Woodie and Shannon S. Conrad; great-grandchildren, Hannah Trakas, Laney Guice, Taylor Woodie, Maddie Woodie, Colby Conrad and Kendall Conrad; sister, Martha “Sis” Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Unity Baptist Church. The Rev. Joe Lawing officiated. Interment was private at Greenwood Cemetery.

MOUNT HOLLY—Gaynell Arrowood Payne, 76, of 109 Homesley Road, died Wednesday Aug. 27, 2008. Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Lone Arrowood and Beatrice Lambert Newton. She was wife of the late Jack Buford Payne Sr. and was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Arrowood Harrison and Audrey Hailey Embrey, and her step-father, Carl Hailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Berea Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Jill Payne Solesbee of Dallas, Joy Payne Braswell and husband Steve of Glade Valley, N.C., Joann Payne Barks and husband Kevin of Stanley, and Jamie Payne Bertholf of Mount Holly; two sons, Jerry Payne and wife Lesly of Mount Holly and Jack Buford Payne Jr. and wife Cindy of Mount Holly; two sisters, Lila Hailey Carr of Fredericksburg, Va., and Kim Arrowood Morgan of Stanley; two brothers, Billy Arrowood of Gastonia and Keith Arrowood of Mount Holly; step-mother, Lula Lambert Arrowood of Mount Holly; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and three special friends, Louise Rice of Mount Holly, Vonita Moose of Lincolnton, and Lavada Burell Smith and husband Ralph of Texas.
The funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Alexis Baptist Church with Revs. Larry Arrowood and Mike Forrester officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

RICHMOND, Va.—Dorothy Severs Albright, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Alexander Severs and Willie Brumley Severs.
Survivors include her her husband of 70 years, George Franklin Albright; and her children, Dottie Albright and husband, James Millikan, Claudia Albright Wyatt and George Franklin Albright Jr. and wife, Beth. She is also survived by six grandchildren, W. Whitlow Wyatt Jr., Sloane Wyatt Alford and husband, Brad, George Franklin “Toby” Albright III and wife, Stephanie, John W. Albright, William A. Albright and Abigail Albright; four great-grandchildren, Bradley Huston Alford Jr., Wyatt Franklin Alford, Adeline Elizabeth Alford and George Franklin Albright IV; sisters, Matilda Severs and Margaret Severs Hunter; and her brother-in-law, Orland Wilson Gabriel, all of Charlotte.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Rd., Richmond. Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 29, in Greenwood Cemetery.

MILDRED SOLES
BELMONT—Mildred Morris Bartee Soles, 88, formerly of 206 East Glendale, died Aug. 28, 2008. A Gaston County native, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Vinnie Shepard Morris. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Fred and Roger Bartee; a daughter, Audrey B. Rhinehart; three brothers; five sisters; and a grandson, Steven Bartee.
She was widowed at age 29 by her children’s father, Otis D. Bartee, a US Merchant Marine Veteran.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Broome of Belmont and Wilma Rushing of Stanley; a son, Otis Bartee Jr. of Mount Holly; a son-in-law, Mitchell Rhinehart of Belmont; two brothers, Mac Morris of Ft. Benning, Ga., and the Rev. Clarence Morris of Dallas; a sister, Doris Bailey of Stanley; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren.
A private family service was held Sunday in the Serenity Mausoleum of Hillcrest Gardens. Pallbearers were here grandsons and great grandsons.

HARRY HOWE
BELMONT—Harry Woodrow Howe, 70, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. Born March 15, 1938, he was the son of the late Harry Woodrow Howe, Sr. and Doris Pearson Howe.
Harry was a member of Park Street United Methodist Church and was retired from the US Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. He also retired from Continental General Tire.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Susan Rigler Howe; son, John Howe of Ocean Isle; daughter-in-law, Kelli Howe; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Chip Gibson of Mount Holly; daughter, Kayla Howe of Belmont; grandchildren, Luke and Breanna Howe, Leah, Trey, Garrett and Caleb Gibson; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Grady Rhyne of Mount Holly; aunts, Louise Howe and Virginia Fry; sisters-in-law, Linda and husband Terry Whisnant, Mary and husband, Herbert Tipton and Martha Helms; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MOUNT HOLLY—Ronald Steve “Ronnie” Helms, 67, of 320 Gaston Avenue, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. Born in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Steve and Smithie Bernice Haigler Helms.
Along with his wife Peggy, he owned and operated Sun Tanz Tanning Salon in Mount Holly for 15 years. He was a volunteer worker with the Mount Holly CRO.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Peggy Jean Winkler Helms; two daughters, Teresa Helms Scott-Ellis and husband Ian of Mount Holly and Lisa Helms Welch and husband Larry of Cherryville; five grandchildren, Melissa Lynette Chaney and husband Howard of Waco, N.C., Staff Sergeant Timothy Steve Mayberry and wife Candace serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq, Matthew Carl Mayberry of Charlotte, Pfc. Robert Eugene Hampton Jr. of Camp Lejune, Samuel Reaves Murphy of Stanley; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Steve Mayberry and Matthew Hayden Mayberry; and one sister, Patricia Wilburn of Georgia.

BELMONT—Richard Milton Painter Jr., 65, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Richard Milton Painter Sr. and Maggie Thrower Painter.
He was retired from Duke Power Company and retired from the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men, former Trustee, and a member of the Administrative Board. He was a former member of the Mount Holly Jaycees. He was a member of the Catawba Valley Cyclist. He was a former dirt track racer.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Miller Painter; two sons, Tim Painter and wife Renee of Belmont and Todd Painter and wife Angie of Mount Holly; five grandchildren, Erin, Jacob, Jonathan, Katie and Sara Painter; one brother, Mike Painter and wife Susan of Mount Holly; and one sister, Sharon Anderson of Horseshoe, N.C.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Revs. Angela Hollar and Roy Byers officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.
